the variety of species of plants, animals and microorganisms, their genes, and the ecosystems they comprise, often considered in relation to a particular area: threats to coastal biodiversity.
Australia with a diverse range of biogeographical regions, home to more than a million species of plants and animals, is distinguished as being one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet. Because of Australia's tectonic history and its geographical isolation for more than 20 million years after the break-up of Gondwana, its divergence of biota is extraordinary. It is also significant in the high percentage of species that are endemic. There are more families endemic in Australia than in any other country in the world: six mammal families, four bird families and fourteen plant families. Similarly in non-terrestrial animals, Australia has eight endemic fish families and more than half the world's shark and ray species in its waters.
